Paint serves to protect, preserve, reinforce, and decorate surfaces. There are many types of paints, including varnish, polyurethane paint, water-based paint, nitro paint, epoxy zinc-rich primer, phosphating primer, and alkyd anti-rust paint, among others.

Why Paint Stripping?

After long-term use, furniture, fences, and other wooden products may crack, fade, and develop other problems. Ultraviolet rays and rain also erode metal structures, leading to problems such as rust and paint cracking, which shorten their service life. It is necessary to remove the old paint from the surface and reapply a fresh coat.

HANTENCNC recommends using a laser paint removal machine to remove the paint, which can prevent corrosion and rust, thereby extending the service life. After repainting, it can prolong its service life and enhance its appearance. Laser cleaning is an environmentally friendly, pollution-free new cleaning method that is efficient and does not cause any damage to the substrate.

Laser Paint Removal Solution

The laser emits a high-energy beam, which is directed through a cleaning head where a motor drives a mirror to oscillate rapidly.

As the laser beam passes through the focusing lens, it is projected onto the surface of the material to be cleaned. The contaminants are then vaporized and removed from the substrate surface.

HANTENCNC’s laser paint removal solution is suit for diverse industries, from automotive and aerospace to shipbuilding, furniture, and general manufacturing. It can effectively removes paint from both metal and wood surfaces while preserving the integrity of the base material.

laser paint removal on metal surface

HANTENCNC’s laser cleaning machines quickly and efficiently remove paint from both metal and non-metal surfaces without damaging the substrate.

Compared to traditional methods such as sandblasting, chemical solvents, or mechanical grinding, laser paint removal is more environmentally friendly, more precise, and safer.

laser paint removal on wood surface

Laser Cleaning machines can accurately control the cleaning area and are easily operated.

The cleaning precision is high. The intensity of the laser energy can be adjusted. The parameters can be set according to the thickness of the paint or rust to prevent damage to the material’s surface.

It is environmentally friendly and pollution-free, but dust will be generated during cleaning. It is recommended to use it with a smoke purifier.

No consumables are consumed, the cost of use is low, and maintenance is also simple.

Laser Paint Removal vs.Traditional Cleaning

There are several methods for removing paint from wood. The main difference between mechanical grinding and laser paint removal is the different modes of action.

Traditional mechanical grinding is often operated with sandpaper or grinding wheels. It relies on friction to remove paint, but it can easily scratch the wood’s surface. This will destroy the original wood grain and affect the appearance.

Laser paint removal uses laser energy to vaporize the paint instantly. It peels off the surface in a non-contact manner. The cleaning process is controllable. The laser energy can be adjusted without damaging the texture and structure of the wood.

Cleaning Method Laser Paint Removal Chemical Paint Stripping Mechanical Grinding High-Temperature Softening
Principle Laser vaporizes and decomposes the paint layer Chemical reagents dissolve paint Uses sandpaper or grinding wheels Softens paint with hot air, then scrapes off
Efficiency (Paint Thickness ≤ μm) 300W 5MJ
5–10 m²/h
Very slow High efficiency Average (requires extra steps)
Cost High initial equipment cost, low long-term consumable cost High cost for chemicals and wastewater treatment Low tool cost, high labor cost Low cost
Environmental protection Best – generates some dust, can use fume extractor Worst – releases toxic substances Moderate – produces a lot of dust Moderate – high heat may release toxic gases
Effect Excellent – can focus to micron level Poor – chemicals may penetrate the wood Moderate – can damage wood texture Moderate – may cause wood to char

How to Choose a Laser Cleaning Machine

for Paint Removal?

Common Issues When Using a Laser Cleaning Machine

(1) When using a pulse cleaning machine to clean the paint on wood products, if the surface is burned black, confirm whether the laser is in the focal position.
You can find the focal point by adjusting the distance between the cleaning head and the material. When the laser energy is the strongest, it is the focal position. When the laser deviates from the focal point, it is easy to cause a fire, resulting in the wood products burning black.

(2) Improper setting of laser power or pulse frequency can also cause problems. If the energy is too low, the cleaning will not be thorough. If it is too high, the material may be damaged.

(3) After long-term use, the protective lens may accumulate dust or be scratched. You can gently wipe it with an alcohol-cotton swab. If there are scratches, you will need to replace the lens.

(4) Before using the continuous laser cleaning machine, please confirm whether the compressed air is connected. If not, the protective lens or focusing lens will be damaged when the laser emits light.

FAQs

Can a pulse laser cleaner remove paint from all wood surfaces?

No. For example, polyurethane paint has a high melting point after curing, typically above 150 °C. Ordinary laser energy cannot instantly vaporize or decompose the layer.

Wood with a loose texture or that is relatively fragile is not suitable for cleaning. For example, rotten wood or low-density boards pressed from sawdust. The laser pulse generates heat during the cleaning process, which may cause the surface to discolor or be damaged.

(1) High-density hardwoods, such as rosewood, oak, walnut, etc. They have a tight structure and good heat resistance, making them suitable for laser cleaning.

(2) If there is metal inlay or metal coating on the wood surface, it cannot be cleaned with a laser. The laser will initially act on the metal. This causes the metal to overheat, resulting in the wood surface being burned and discolored.

Pulse laser cleaner. Because continuous laser cleaners generate more heat to the substrate. Thin plates are easily deformed after being heated.
